ENDOMETRIOSIS

Endometriosis occurs when tissue that normally lines the uterus appears elsewhere in the body, particularly the fallopian tube, ovaries, rectum, bladder or other pelvic tissue.

Who get it?

Endometriosis can occur in any menstruating woman, but most common in those who have not had children, had first child after age of 30, and those with short menstrual cycle (less than 27 days).

Less frequently occur in women with multiple children, use low dose oral birth control and exercise regularly.

Symptoms:

Eventually these can cause scarring of the in fallopian tubes and ovaries, leading to infertility.

As these are tissues that line the uterus, they responds to the hormone produced by the ovaries as the normal endometrial tissue, so they can bleed during menstruation, and often cause cramps and pains. The actual amount of tissue does not determine the severity of the illness.

Causes:

  • Low/ faulty immune system
  • Hormones
  • Genetic factors
  • May be triggered by endometrial cells loosened during menstruation ‘backing up’ through the fallopian tubes into the pelvis
  • But mostly the cause is unknown

Treatment involves;

  • Pain management – to relieves cramps
  • Oral contraceptives – to control the hormones, making period shorter and lighter
  • Anti-gonadotrophin drugs
  • Laparoscopic surgery – to remove the tissue
  • Hysterectomy – removal of the uterus in severe case

How does diet help?

Basically to reduce symptoms (cramps/ pain) by reducing inflammation, reducing oestrogen levels, balancing the hormones, reduce weight (oestrogen is stored in fat, and endometriosis is fed by oestrogen), reduce toxins.

A healthy balanced diet also helps to increase energy levels, boost immune system and improve overall health.

WHAT TO EAT AND WHAT NOT TO EAT

FATS AND OIL

Reduced intake of saturated fat (lard, butter, dairy products, palm oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter

– Includes omega-3 in your diet (flaxseeds and flaxseed oil, salmon, tuna, evening primrose oil, olive oil, walnuts, beans). Omega-3 helps in the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins that are useful in soothing your discomfort

FIBRE

High fibre diet reduces oestrogen production and improves digestion. You should take around 25g fibre/day. Source includes; wholegrains (but NOT wheat), brown rice, oatmeals, legumes, fresh fruits and veges.

SOYA

Although there are contrary believes, most experts agree that soya has high amounts of phytic acid and should be avoided as phytic acid can aggravate endometriosis symptoms.
